About Taenia solium
The cestode Taenia solium, or pork tapeworm, is a parasite transmitted to pigs through human faeces or contaminated fodder, and to humans through uncooked or undercooked pork. Species can be found in many areas of the world including Africa, Southern Europe, Asia, South America, and some areas of North America. Infections can lead to cysticercosis, which is a disease that can cause seizures, so it is important seek treatment.
Genome Assembly & Annotation
Assembly
The T. solium genome was sequenced by the National University of Mexico. The initial version of the genome was described in Tsai et al (2013). The assembly has subsequently been improved, and the version presented here is the March 2014 snapshot of GeneDB.
Annotation
The original gene predictions were made by the National University of Mexico, as described by Tsai et al (2013). The gene models have since been iteratively improved. The gene set represented here is the March 2014 snapshot from GeneDB.
